All About Quiting Smoking

Natural Remedies

Many doctors and scientists disagree about the effectiveness of natural and natural remedies, but some people who try them find that they are helpful to one extent or another.

Here are some common remedies you might consider for smoking cessation.

St. John’s Wort

St. John’s Wort is an herb that is primarily used for depression and for elevating one’s mood.  It is unclear exactly how it works but some believe it stimulates the production of dopamine, which in turn brings about a feeling calm and a sense of having been rewarded.  Dopamine is one of the chemicals released when smoking, which means that if it can be released while taking St. John’s Wort then a person will be less likely to want cigarettes in order to have that sensation.

St. John’s Wort may also work to calm nerves by stimulating endorphins, which in turn make a person feel happy and relaxed.

Although St. John’s Wort appears to be reasonably safe when taken alone, it can interfere with the effectiveness of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, such as antidepressants, drugs to treat HIV infections and AIDS, drugs to prevent organ rejection for transplant patients, and oral contraceptives.  If you are taking any prescription medication whatsoever, speak to your doctor about St. John’s Wort as he or she may recommend that you hold off on trying this herb while taking your other medications.

Ginseng

Ginseng is thought to produce both dopamine and endorphins, which in turn can make a person feel relaxed and happy.  There have not yet been enough studies conducted to prove or disprove this theory and those who have taken ginseng have reported some success with their smoking cessation efforts.
